At the turn of the century, William Murphy lived in a one-room apartment. He managed to find a way to automatically flip his bed on one end and store it in the closet. Murphy wall beds have come a long way in the last one-hundred years, but the idea has remained the same. In fact, antique Murphy beds are still in high demand. Many original Murphy beds remain in old apartments, particularly in San Francisco where the bed originated.

When searching for an original Murphy bed, keep in mind that the original patent date of the mechanism that raised and lowered the bed was 1900. While some beds may be housed in cabinetry slightly older than that, it is important to remember to check the authenticity of the antique.
