Office/Home Office Furniture

These days many of us work in an office. Whether it's our own home office in a spare bedroom or a cubicle farm of 100 people, we may spend around 8 hours a day sitting in an office chair. It makes sense, then, that this time should be spent in a comfortable environment. Not only do we feel more relaxed when we're comfortable, but we're also more productive and less susceptible to injuries caused by poor posture and repetitive stress.

So what can we do to make our office more comfortable? Well, it's more involved than simply buying a nice chair! Here we'll discuss a few items of office furniture that can increase comfort, reduce stress and kick productivity up a notch.

Computer Desks

There are really two main benefits of using a dedicated computer desk. The first, of course, is that it's designed specifically for your computer. You can expect a sliding tray for your keyboard, so the desk surface has only to be deep enough to accommodate your monitor. In a small office this space saver can be a real boon.

The second benefit is that a computer desk is ergonomically designed so that you can comfortably use a computer for long periods of time. Anyone who has ever worked a 10-hour shift on a keyboard that is placed too high will know that it can be hard on the wrists - something that can become a chronic problem over time.

Office Desks

Despite the obvious benefits of a computer desk, the traditional office desk shouldn't be overlooked. The office desk is designed with space in mind, maximising surface area while providing valuable storage space.

Traditionally popular as a status symbol, the office desk is ideal for those who don't have to worry about saving space. In addition, a well-selected office desk can be comfortably employed as a computer desk, too.

Office Chairs

Possibly the most important item of office furniture, your choice of office chair can mean the difference between comfort and endless back and joint pain. Since you can be expected to spend as much as a third of your life sitting in an office chair your decision should not be taken lightly.

Your office chair, then, should be chosen depending on the requirements of your job. If you need to move around a lot during the day to reach for files, you should choose a chair that swivels or moves on castors to reduce the strain on your back as you twist. If you spend your day in the same position you should select a chair that offers excellent lower back support to ensure that you keep a good posture.

Depending on your budget you can go all the way from a simple ergonomic office chair all the way to a luxury leather executive chair. The most important factor, though, is your health, and it doesn't pay to cut corners in that area.

Bookcases / Bookshelves

Your choice of bookcase depends entirely on how much you're willing to spend. As a $100 bookcase performs just as well as one that costs $1,000, your only consideration is appearance. From simple laminates to luxury hardwoods, the key here is the materials used. The choice is yours.

File Cabinets

Your investment in file cabinets should hinge on your security concerns as well as your storage needs. For a home office you may be able to get away with a simple, basic file cabinet. If, however, you are buying for a large office then you'll need to select cabinets designed for security. If security is an issue in your office then it may be beneficial to pay a little extra for added peace of mind.

Workcenters and Modular Furniture

Most useful in large open-plan offices, workcenters and modular furniture are designed as an inexpensive solution to your office furniture requirements. Ideal for a growing office, modular units can be added according to your needs. Designed to afford privacy to staff while minimizing the use of space, selecting good modular furniture can help reduce your floor space requirements - and can actually save money in the long run.

So, whether you are buying for your own use or on behalf of a staff, you should understand where you can afford to cut back on costs and where you need to put quality above price. Making good choices in selecting your office furniture today can save money, increase productivity and prevent health problems down the line. Choose wisely.
